McKayla believed we were doing things backwards. She believed we should put more time, money and effort into stopping children from trying drugs, not wait until addiction has taken hold and then try to save them.

Using clear language they can understand, it explains drugs, street names, warning signs, peer pressure, overdose, naloxone and why one unknown pill or one dangerous choice can change a future forever.

McKayla wanted to get clean and help her grandma write this book for young people. Sadly, she lost her battle with addiction before they had the chance. Her grandma finished it for her so McKayla’s experience could help protect another child.

This is not a fairy tale, and it does not soften the truth. It is designed for young people to complete at school or at home and then review with a trusted adult. It never asks children to reveal private information about themselves or their families.

McKayla could not go back and change her first choice, but it may not be too late for another child.
